Work-Life Balance in Europe. The Role of Job Quality
This book, edited by Sonja Drobnič and Ana M. Guillén, addresses tensions between work and private life. The amount of time spent on work, nature and design of the job, and working conditions in general influence the degree to which people are able to combine work and other important parts of life, such as family, care and social life. The eleven chapters of this volume explore job quality, job security, working conditions and time-use patterns of individuals and households. They also look at institutional contexts, such as family policy and other country characteristics. The authors show which work-related demands and resources interfere with, or facilitate, work-life balance, and how these factors interact with institutional settings. (Palgrave Macmillan 2011)

Aging Populations, Globalization and the Labor Market: Comparing Late Working Life and Retirement in Modern Societies
This book by H.-P. Blossfeld, S. Buchholz, and K. Kurz presents a timely analysis of late career and retirement in nine European societies and the USA. Many European societies relied on early retirement programs in order to relieve national labor markets. However, one of the major challenges facing European and Northern American societies today is demographic aging, which in turn places pension systems under substantial pressure. This study investigates how these developments have impacted the situation of older workers and retirees. In particular, the book looks at how social inequalities in later life have developed in light of recent pension reforms.(Edward Elgar Publishing 2011)

Family Policy and Demographic Change (EESC Opinion)
Family policies do not fall within the remit of the European Union. Nevertheless, the EU may enact legislation on balancing work and family life, equality at work between women and men, and child protection and development, recommends the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). In their report “Family Policy and Demographic Change” the EESC also suggests a better coordination of family orientated initiatives and funding arrangements on the EU level.

Cooperation in integrating immigrants (EESC Opinion)
In the near future, Europe will become more diverse due to mobility of its citizens as well as due to an increase in immigration from Non-EU Countries. This presents a challenge at local and regional level which should be tackled in close cooperation between authorities and civil society organisations, says a report by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Under the headline “Cooperation in integrating immigrants” it lists recommendations concerning the legal framework as well as the more complex process of social inclusion.

Demography Report 2010 - Older, more numerous and diverse Europeans
The third Demography Report is published by the European Commission in cooperation with Eurostat. It shows that Europe is getting more diverse, Europeans tend to live longer and healthier lives and fertility rates are rising slowly. However, as the average fertility rate is still only 1.6 children per woman, our population will start decreasing in 2050-2060. The European Demography Report sets out the main facts and figures concerning demographic change and discusses appropriate policy responses. A Life-Course Perspective on Migration and Integration
Over the past four decades, the sociological life-course approach has become an increasingly important perspective in the social sciences. Yet it remains greatly underrepresented in the research of migration and integration. The studies in this volume, edited by Matthias Wingens, Helga de Valk, Michael Windzio, and Can Aybek, attempt to decrease this deficit by applying life-course concepts to research on migrants and migration across Europe. The book includes both quantitative and qualitative studies and is organised thematically by important domains in the life-course. Exploring useful cross-linkages between the two research traditions, it argues that our understanding of migration settlement patterns can be advanced through the application of the life-course perspective (Springer 2011).

Doing Better for Families (OECD Report)
This new OECD report provides a comprehensive overview of family well-being and family policies in light of the significant changes in household size, composition and fertility rates throughout much of the industrialised world. In addition to its detailed country-level findings, the report also offers a number of recommendations for ways in which governments can protect, encourage and support family well-being, including safeguarding social support for the poorest families and integrating leave, care and workplace support for parents of young children (E-book/Paperback available for purchase, OECD Publishing, 2011).
