What concerns younger people, how can they participate socially and politically, what influences their life course and how do they deal with crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic? From 16 to 18 May, experts from politics, science and society come together at the Berlin Demography Days to discuss these questions. The participants will not simply talk about younger people but also with them: students from schools in France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany will participate in a panel debate and have the opportunity to discuss these questions with Dubravka Šuica, Vice-President for Democracy and Demography of the EU Commission.
The panel discussion is part of the evening event on 16 May from 18:00 CET in a hybrid format, i.e. both live in the atrium of the WissenschaftsForum at Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt and online. Introductions are given among others by Lisa Paus (video), Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and Juliane Seifert, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs (video).
In addition to the hybrid event, all three days feature online discussions, during which experts such as Klaus Hurrelmann, Professor for Public Health and Education at Hertie School, Shireen Jejeebhoi, Director of Mumbai’s Aksha Centre for Equity and Wellbeing, and Verlee Miranda, Senior Economist at OECD, discuss these topics:
- Younger People’s Voice in Politics
- Attitudes, Aspirations and Crisis Resilience
- Younger People and the Life Course
- Policies Supporting Younger People
The organisers are Diakonie Deutschland and Population Europe, the network of leading European research institutions in the field of population sciences.
