The European Commission is working on a new regulatory framework for European statistics on population (ESOP), aimed at bringing together demographic, migration and census data. In this context, it is carrying out a public consultation to gather input from stakeholders. All potential stakeholders – institutions, organisations and citizens – are invited to give their opinion between 30 September and 23 December 2021.

Currently, ESOP covers official statistics on population and housing censuses, demography, and international migration, including changes of residence between countries within and from/to the EU, as well as acquisition and loss of citizenship.

However, it does not include statistics on administrative procedures linked to migration (such as asylum applications or residence permits) or statistics from European social surveys (such as on income and living conditions or the labour force).

The ESOP initiative aims to ensure that population statistics remain relevant, coherent and comparable in a time of many demographic, migratory, social and economic changes. The public consultation covers both backward-looking evaluation of existing EU legislation as well as forward-looking modernisation options.
