Graduate Programs in Applied Demography at Penn State

Penn State’s online Master of Professional Studies and the Graduate Certificate in Applied Demography (APDEM) programs emphasize training in population data and analytical techniques. This unique program explores demographic concepts and provides real-world examples of applying demography to problems in business, government, health, academia and the nonprofit sector.


Consider a 12-credit Graduate Certificate or 30-credit Master of Professional Studies (MPS). Now accepting applications.  


Planned online course offerings for the 2019 Fall semester include: 


  • Demographic Techniques
  • Applied Demography in Practice
  • Public Sector Demography, among others.

It is an excellent choice for those students and working professionals seeking and desiring to enhance their skills in demographic analysis to advance their careers, support their employer’s organizational objectives, and better anticipate future population changes can benefit from this program. Applications draw on demographic research and data analysis from both United States and international contexts.


With course designers and instructors that are leaders in the discipline and backed by Penn State’s award-winning World Campus, this program provides the opportunity to develop applied demographic skills from anywhere in the world. For those who already have experience or previous studies in demography, it is possible to enroll in any of the individual courses that are offered for professional development or personal enrichment.
