On Tuesday, 18 October 2022, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” organised its first online workshop to discuss local mechanisms of social integration, engagement and agency as meaningful tools to counter demographic challenges of depopulation and aging and prevent their negative social effects.

On Tuesday, 18 October 2022, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” organised its first online workshop to discuss local mechanisms of social integration, engagement and agency as meaningful tools to counter demographic challenges of depopulation and aging and prevent their negative social effects. Five pivot outcomes came from the engaging conversations in three panels and the plenary discussion session, that shed light on the efforts and needs of different generations in rural and depopulating areas.

Unintended but Positive
In a recent study, Fanny Kluge, Emilio Zagheni, Elke Loichinger and Tobias Vogt explore how different areas of life might be affected as populations grow older and smaller in Germany. The country is at a relatively advanced stage of the demographic transition, which makes it ideal to study the potential long-run implications of population ageing. The analysis mainly investigates what will happen if conditions observed today prevail.

Books and Reports: A Future With Children – Booklet And Study By German, Swiss And Austrian Researchers
A European team of 25 researchers focused on the issue of declining birth rates in three German-speaking countries. A summary of their findings and recommendations has now been published in a booklet that questions many commen myths. It can be downloaded for free in English, German and French (see link). The team, gathered between 2009 and 2012 by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Leopoldina, represents various disciplines – sociology, demography, history and medicine.
