The Dramatic Residential Insecurity in Spain in the Context of the European Union

Residential insecurity is a threat to the life plans of young European households. It is therefore interesting to ascertain the present situation of households by focusing on the perceptions and opinions of those most concerned. The latest 2016 edition of the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) produced by Eurofound offers material for exploring the opinions of households about the short-term (six months) security of their housing.

<p>Young Spanish adults are more fearful than European counterparts of losing a roof over their heads because of being unable to pay (54% compared with 33%). The difference has also increased in recent years as the weight of rental sector has risen. </p>

The largest and most up-to-date study performed so far shows that the school progress of children with parents of the same sex does not differ from their peers in the United States today. This study, published in the leading journal Demography, also provides large-scale evidence that children adopted by same-sex parents do as well as children adopted by different-sex parents.

IIASA World Population Program Director Wolfgang Lutz has received a new grant from the European Research Council.

The project will explore human wellbeing as criterion for sustainable development
The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Wolfgang Lutz a 2017 Advanced Grant. The project aims to develop new indicators for long-term human wellbeing that include feedbacks from environmental and other changes. Lutz is scientific director of the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), and professor of applied statistics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). These three institutions together are part of the Wittgenstein Center, of which Lutz is the founding director.

This UNICEF report presents, for the first time, comprehensive global data about these children – where they are born, where they move, and some of the dangers they face along the way. The report sheds light on the truly global nature of childhood migration and displacement, highlighting major challenges in every region.
