Demography and housing provision are connected. Demographic change affects housing demand, and in reverse: housing supply affects demographic change. Research shows that housing supply can affect family events (such as childbirth, couple formation, couple dissolution) and vice versa. Policy can best address local populations’ housing needs by understanding some of these dynamics. The presentation aims to help policymakers better understand how: (1) demography, families and housing are intertwined, (2) housing policy can help cater for the housing needs of young adults, families and older people, and (3) although the options are limited, there is some room for influencing local population growth and decline with housing policies.
