James W. Vaupel 

Professor Dr James W. Vaupel (2 May 1945 – 27 March 2022) was a co-founder of our network Population Europe and the European Doctoral School of Demography, founding director and director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, the Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging (2013-2017) and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics, and Professor of Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Natural Sciences at the University of Southern Denmark.

Anatoly Vishnevsky

Professor Dr Anatoly G. Vishnevsky (1 April 1935 – 15 January 2021) was a Professor emeritus and Director of the Institute of Demography at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow. He was one of the most eminent Russian demographers and was held in high esteem by his students and colleagues. He was a partner in many European research collaborations and a devoted contributor to the public understanding of demography.

Professor Dr Jan M. Hoem (1939-2017) was a Director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Professor of Demography at Stockholm University, and Honorary Professor of Statistical Demography at the University of Rostock. Being one of the most outstanding demographers in Europe, Jan M. Hoem has been particularly instrumental for establishing European demography.

Janina Jóźwiak

Professor Dr Janina Jóźwiak (February 15, 1948 - July 19, 2016) was an Ordinary Professor and Former Rector of the Warsaw School of Economics. In addition to her outstanding research work and scientific achievements, her great support for the next generation of demographers and her commendable community service to the Polish academic world, Janina Jóźwiak was an active member in the European demography community, e.g. as President of the European Association for Population Studies (2003-2008), Vice President of the Council of Advisors of Population Europe (since 2009) and member of the Scientific Board of the European Doctoral School of Demography (since 2005).
