News: Professor Paul Boyle awarded CBE

Professor Paul Boyle, Chief Executive Economic and Social Research Council and President and Vice Chancellor, University of Leicester has been appointed a CBE in the Queen's New Year’s Honours for services to Social Science. The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) is awarded for having a role at national level, or a leading role at regional level, and for a distinguished, innovative contribution to any area.

Professor Boyle said: “This is a tremendous honour which is recognition of the exceptional work done by colleagues at the Economic and Social Research Council. UK social sciences punch above their weight internationally and the ESRC makes a substantial contribution to this success.”

Boyle was appointed as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester in October 2014. Prior to this post, he was Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK’s largest funding agency for social science research. During this time he was the International Champion of Research Councils UK, with responsibility for international strategy on behalf of all seven UK research councils. Professor Boyle was also President of Science Europe, representing over 50 funding agencies across Europe. He published widely in Demography and Epidemiology.

Professor Boyle is Member of the Board of Governors of Population Europe's Information Centre.

Congratulations, Paul Boyle!
