Lokale kulturelle und regionale Kontexte prägen stark die Wahrnehmung von Migration. Während die Migrationspolitik der EU oft zwischen Management und Kontrolle einerseits sowie Integration und Inklusion andererseits schwankt, findet Integration letztlich in lokalen Gemeinschaften und am Arbeitsplatz statt. Neben Beschäftigung und wirtschaftlicher Teilhabe können diese sozialen Räume sowohl Inklusion als auch demokratische Kultur fördern – schließlich beginnt Demokratie auch an der Arbeitsstätte.

Local cultural and regional contexts strongly shape how migration is perceived. At present, the EU’s migration policy oscillates between management and control on the one hand, and integration and inclusion on the other. Yet integration ultimately unfolds in local communities and workplaces. Beyond employment and economic participation, these spaces can nurture both inclusion and democratic culture — after all, democracy often begins on the shop floor. 

Despite limited resources and investment in infrastructure, many communities find innovative ways to sustain public life and integrate newcomers. This new policy insight highlights the need for more social spaces, partnerships between civil society, local administrations, and private enterprises, and intergenerational collaboration to tackle future challenges, including integration.

Trotz begrenzter Ressourcen und eingeschränkten Investitionen in die Infrastruktur finden viele Gemeinden innovative Wege, das öffentliche Leben aufrechtzuerhalten und Neuankömmlinge zu integrieren.
