New and previously unknown insights into the diversity of demographic change with the help of newly developed population diagrams will be presented by the BiB at a press conference on 11 July 2022 from 14:30.

Demographic change has progressed between 1991 and 2021 and has greatly altered the population structure in Germany. Previous graphical representations of change, for example in the form of population pyramids, are losing their familiar contours and must be adapted to the new demographic realities.

A recent publication by the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) takes this development into account and looks at it from a completely different perspective. This results in new, previously unknown perspectives on demographic change over the past 30 years. Central findings will be presented at the press conference. The newly developed population diagrams in pyramid form impressively illustrate how the situation of different generations has changed with regard to important areas of life such as family and lifestyles, education, gainful employment, mobility and migration. It also becomes clear from the findings that demographic change is not an ominous fate, but shows itself to be very diverse and thus also capable of being shaped in many ways.
