Are regional population preferences changing?
Covid-19 has significantly affected migration flows, both at the national and the international level. Migration levels were down as a result of lockdown and other restrictions. People were forced to work from home, and discovered that they could be productive without being at the workplace. Moreover, cities were seen as places with higher risks of contamination of the virus. In this seminar, they will put together recent empirical evidence of regional migration patterns in European countries to verify if these covid effects are visible in changes in interregional migration flows. A series of renowned researchers from Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, France, Spain and Italy will shed light on recent developments in their countries. In particular, they will focus on the following questions:
- To what extent have migration patterns changed since the start of the pandemics
- To what extent are these changes likely to be structural, or are there signs that there will be a reversal of these changes?
- Is covid the single most important factor, or are there other factors responsible as well.
Presently, the covid pandemics is barely over, and might even return with a new variant in the fall of 2022. In individual countries, the evidence of its effects on interregional migration so far may not always be very clear yet. By sketching a broad picture across European countries, they hope to discern some common patterns that may give more weight to the individual observations.
The seminar will take place on June 29th from 13:30 to 17:00 PM. The meeting is hybrid and is open to anyone interested, either for on-site participation or online. The location is Grote Kruisstraat 2/1 in Groningen: room M.0061, Munting Building, University of Groningen.
