The "Trento School of Applied Quantitative Research" is a multi-year advanced training school on key themes of sociology as analytical, quantitative and interdisciplinary social science, thus involving sociological, economic, demographic, statistical and computer science approaches.

The School aims to provide a systematic integration of the theoretical, methodological and technical ‘front edge’ aspects of applied quantitative research.

The school is addressed to PhD students, post-docs and researchers of universities, public and private research institutions in the early stages of their career or willing to deepen their preparation acquiring advanced technical-methodological knowledge applicable in their research. Official language of the School will be English.
The second edition focuses on Health and in particular on “Health Inequalities, Family and Labour Market Dynamics”.

The School will be held in person in Trento, Italy, from the 24th to the 26th of November 2021 (three days).

They aim at hosting the school in person in Trento, but might be forced to switch to a hybrid or online mode according to the development of the pandemic.

Program

The substantive topics include the correlates of psychological and physical health in terms of parental marriage and ethnicity, employment and unemployment transitions, and the role of welfare policies in longitudinal and comparative perspectives. Applied sessions cover classification and regression tree (CART) methods, hybrid panel models and difference-in-differences propensity score matching.

Morning session

Presentation of a recently published research article. Detailed discussion of the research questions, theoretical framework and underlying debates, formulation of research hypotheses and the innovative contribution with respect to the previous literature.

Afternoon session

Applied session to address the research strategy adopted and the methodological problems related to the implementation of the analysis used to answer the research questions of the study. This is a more practical session in the laboratory, in which the participants will be able to apply firsthand methods and techniques used in the works presented and discussed in the morning.

The statistical software Stata and/or R will be used.

This organization will give participants the opportunity to learn all the conceptual and empirical steps necessary for the development of a theoretically-guided empirical research article, which make use of the most advanced analysis techniques proposed in the literature.
