Working into old age? (Political) conditions and limits to working until and beyond retirement age
Tuesday, 3 June 2025, 1-2 pm, CEST (Zoom)
(with German-English simultaneous translation)
Prof. Dr. Dirk Hofäcker
Professor of Quantitative Methods of Empirical Social Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen
In light of demographic change and an ageing working population, employees are expected to remain in the workforce longer than in the past. 'Active ageing' policies are designed to ensure that employees continue to work until the official retirement age — and possibly even beyond. Against this backdrop, the presentation will critically assess the labour market situation for older people in Germany. It will address the following questions, among others: how has the employment behaviour of older people in Germany developed in recent years? Are older employees able and willing to work for longer, and if so, what are the conditions? What barriers exist to longer working lives for older people? Can these be overcome? The presentation will examine general social trends and relevant differences within the older working population.
