Books and Reports: Europe’s Societal Challenges. An Analysis Of Global Societal Trends To 2030 And Their Impact On The EU
Rising inequality will be the single most prominent societal challenge for the EU in the coming decades, says a newly published report titled “Europe’s Societal Challenges. An analysis of global societal trends to 2030 and their impact on the EU”. The authors argue that because the EU is entering an era of long-term slow economic growth, it cannot rely on productivity growth as the engine for wellbeing. The EU must invest in its human resources, giving citizens the tools to seize all the opportunities that come their way, by boosting health, inclusion, education, skills and connectivity.

Migrants have likely always sent money back to their home countries, and currently in many developing countries remittances comprise the second largest source of financial inflow. But remittance behaviour is also common within Europe. What is the motivation behind this? All studies on remittances to home countries have thus far focused on first-generation migrants. The main driving forces behind these remittances have therefore been thoroughly analysed. But in their recent research Tineke Fokkema, Eralba Cela and Elena Ambrosetti focused on second-generation migrants.

Migration Becomes More Volatile
Population Europe: Migration is the most uncertain demographic component. Do we really know what happens to migrants in times of recession? Jakub Bijak: We know even less than during the periods of stable economy. Under any circumstances immigration is quite difficult to measure and predict, or even to define in a precise way. During the crisis the situation is even worse, as migration becomes more volatile.
