While the world population as a whole is still increasing, individual world regions and countries show different regional trends. Births, deaths and migration are also subject to continuous change. Today, these population processes are at the centre of sustainable development, as pursued by the United Nations with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To shape human development in a sustainable way, it is necessary to understand the causes and challenges of demographic change in order to better assess future population trends and take into account their influence on society, the economy and the environment.
