This Award honors outstanding achievements by an individual scholar on the intersection of social policy and family demography. The Award has been initiated by the Nordic Demographic Society to celebrate Jan M. Hoem’s (1939-2017) achievements in advancing Nordic and European family demography and social policy research.

A cohort perspective
Europe displays important variations in the level of internal migration, with a clear spatial gradient of high mobility in northern and western Europe but lower mobility in the south and east. However, cross-national variation in levels of internal migration remains poorly understood, because it is analysed almost exclusively using cross-sectional data and period measures.

News: European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities
Central European University is pleased to announce the seventh annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. This pioneering award, first announced in 2011 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Central European University, honors academics in the social sciences and humanities who teach at higher education institutions in the European Higher Education Area.

News: Allianz Young Researcher Award for Demography (in German)
(Allianz-Nachwuchspreis für Demografie)
  Um junge Wissenschaftler/innen im Fachgebiet der Demografie zu fördern, lobt die Allianz in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Demographie (DGD) auch im Jahr 2017 einen Preis für herausragende Arbeiten aus, die einen Bezug zu demografischen Fragestellungen aufweisen. Das von der Allianz gestiftete Preisgeld beträgt insgesamt 6.000 €. Insgesamt werden vier Preise im Wert von je 1.500 € vergeben. Die Preisverleihung erfolgt im Rahmen des Berliner Allianz-Forums im Februar 2018.

Press Release from the UNECE
In a context of continued population ageing, countries in the UNECE region have made strong progress towards promoting active ageing and ensuring inclusive and sustainable societies for all ages. But further efforts are needed to realize the potentials of living longer. These are the main findings of a new report assessing trends and progress in countries’ actions in response to the challenges and potential linked to ageing populations, released today at the opening of the 4th UNECE Ministerial Conference on Ageing, held in Lisbon.

News: Research Networks as an Interface between the Public and Science
Contribution to the book "Public Social Science"
In the newly published book Öffentliche Gesellschaftswissen (Public Social Science) by Stefan Selke and Annette Treibel, several members of the Population Europe Secretariat collaborated on a chapter to share the best-practice experiences of Population Europe as a demographic research network. The chapter explains how the network assists leading researchers and research institutions in Europe in connecting with political and societal decision-makers, as well as the general public.

News: Prof. Godelieve Masuy-Stroobant
Population Europe sadly announces the passing of Prof. Godelieve Masuy-Stroobant (1948-2017). As the director of the Center for Demographic Research at the Université catholique de Louvain, Godelieve was one of the founding members of Population Europe in 2009 and actively supported activities, particularly during the formative years of our network, and ever since.
