Conocer el número de personas que entra y sale de los países Europeos es importante para las políticas y para la estabilidad de los sistemas sociales. Sin embargo, los datos son incompletos y, como consecuencia, las previsiones de los flujos migratorios no resultan fiables. Los demógrafos han desarrollado un nuevo método para hacer frente a este problema, mejorando tanto la descripción como la predicción del tamaño de los flujos migratorios por sexo y edad.

James Raymer, Joop de Beer and Rob van der Erf have developed a new method for estimating migration flows within all 31 countries in the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) from 2002 to 2007. Having the correct data on migration flows is essential if, for example, a country expects that immigration could solve certain problems, such as a shrinking workforce or the financing of pension systems. They are also necessary for politicians developing integration policies.  

Connaître le nombre de personnes se déplaçant entre et sortant des pays européens est important pour les politiques et la stabilité des systèmes sociaux en Europe. Cependant, les sources de données sont incomplètes et par conséquent les prévisions des flux migratoires ne sont pas fiables. Les démographes ont mis en place une nouvelle méthode pour aller au-delà de ces données incomplètes afin de décrire et de prévoir avec précision l’ampleur des flux migratoires, même selon l’âge et le sexe.

Für die Politik und die Stabilität der Sozialsysteme in Europa ist es von von Bedeutung, die Anzahl der Personen zu kennen, die in europäische Staaten zuwandern oder aus diesen fortziehen.. Die Datenquellen sind jedoch unvollständig, folglich  sind die Vorhersagen von Migrationsströmen unzuverlässig. Um die Größe von Migrationsströmen (sogar nach Alter und Geschlecht) exakt zu beschreiben und vorherzusagen, haben Demografen eine neue Methode für den Umgang mit unvollständigen Daten entwickelt.

For decades, Sweden's innovations in family policy have inspired other countries in Europe to follow its lead. The Swedish approach, dubbed the "earner-carer model", has focused on getting men and women to share work and family responsibilities, facilitating the combination of relatively high levels of female employment and childbearing with low child poverty rates. Now recent reforms are changing the playing field. A scientific article by Tommy Ferrarini and Ann-Zofie Duvander argues that the reforms are likely to increase polarization in Swedish society.

Every time a new boat with African refugees reaches the shores of Lampedusa or the Canary Islands, there is a new wave of media debate about African migration to Europe. Several countries even created new policy measures to respond to the masses of new migrants that they expect. However, the real numbers of migrants from sub-Saharan African countries are much lower than the public discourse sometimes suggests, as research from David Lessault and Cris Beauchemin shows.

Chaque fois qu’un bateau de réfugiés africains atteint les côtes de Lampedusa ou les Îles Canaries, ceci crée une nouvelle vague de débats médiatiques sur la question de la migration africaine vers l’Europe. Plusieurs pays ont même développé de nouvelles mesures politiques pour répondre à l’arrivée massive de nouveaux migrants à laquelle ils s’attendent à devoir faire face. Toutefois, le nombre réel d'immigrés provenant des pays d’Afrique subsaharienne est bien inférieur à ce que le discours public laisse parfois entendre, comme le montre le travail de David Lessault et Cris Beauchemin.
